Since the beginning of the 21st century, several tragic events have greatly affected people on a global scale. World Events aims to inform students of some of these events by providing starting points for research and investigation.
The activities endeavour to promote report writing, explanations and recounting through the topical areas of current and past world events. Topics covered include disease epidemics, computer viruses, terrorism, refugees, international conflict, political events, travel and natural and man-made disasters. The book exploits the current online media available, including relevant news services as well as the official websites of world events and organisations. In addition, traditional print media, such as newspapers, magazines and library resources will be needed to complete some of the activities.
Content is divided into sections with each section containing background notes and relevant website references for further research. Several activity sheets can be used more than once to address a particular one-off event, such as an election. Teaching ideas are given where appropriate.
