The Time for Handwriting books are designed to help the teacher and child treat handwriting in the classroom. Stages and sequences for the teaching of handwriting have been set out in this book along with a variety of strategies along with a detailed Program of Achievement, Objectives and Lesson Register.
The child is encouraged to practise basic movements, fluencies, letter shapes and families, as well as numerals. Letters are practised in the context of words. This is extended as skills develop in writing the alphabet.
All lower case and capital letters use the strategies of track, trace, copy and evaluate. When capital letters are practised, the student can copy sentences.
The colouring of pictures helps develop fine motor skills, essential for good handwriting.
At the completion of each lesson the student is encouraged to self evaluate while the teacher has an Outcomes Checklist to assist with monitoring the development of handwriting skills.
