Problem Solving in Science will enable your students to become critical thinkers and independent, creative problem solvers by stimulating their thinking beyond factual recall and procedure. The series engages students in higher order thinking, which involves the application, synthesis and evaluation of knowledge and skills within a scientific context. Each book in this series contains 10 topics and each topic features a 3-step approach to exploring the topic. However teachers do not have to follow the 3 steps as the pages have been designed so that they are self-contained. Each section begins with an ‘Attention Grabber’ that will focus student attention and arouse curiosity before the student knows what the teacher has planned. This is followed by the ‘Give us a Clue’ section, a hands-on activity to flesh out the basic scientific notion presented by the ‘Attention Grabber’. The ‘Challenge’ provides the vehicle to apply this notion to an unknown situation. Content, questions and answers are provided for each section, Boxes of information and hints in the form of ‘So What’s Going On?’ and ‘Figure it out!’ are included to consolidate an understanding of the science presented in each section.
